John was already a seven-time world champion on motorcycles, and winner of six Isle of Man TTs, when, in 1960, he switched to cars. Four years later, he won the Formula 1 World Championship, becoming the first, and still the only, person to win world championships on both two and four wheels. A lifelong friend of Goodwood, he became a patron of Festival of Speed in 1993.
