About Madness

Madness are one of the UK’s most beloved bands, with fans still thoroughly enjoying their catchy sounds to this day.

Madness is a British ska band that formed in 1976. The group's unique sound is characterised by their use of saxophone and trumpet in conjunction with a traditional rock band setup. Madness rose to fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and their music has remained popular in the decades since.

The band members first met while attending school in North London. They began playing music together as teenagers, performing covers of popular songs at local pubs and clubs. Eventually, they began writing their own material, and in 1978 they released their first single, ‘The Prince'.

‘The Prince’ quickly gained popularity and was followed by a string of successful singles, including ‘One Step Beyond', ‘My Girl', and ‘Baggy Trousers.’ These songs were marked by their upbeat, danceable rhythms and catchy hooks. They helped to establish Madness as a leading figure in the British ska revival of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Throughout the 1980s, Madness continued to release hit singles and albums, including ‘Our House', ‘It Must Be Love,’ and ‘House of Fun.’ Their music was characterised by its witty lyrics, lively instrumentation, and ska-inspired rhythms. The band's unique sound and energetic live performances made them a beloved figure in the British music scene.

In addition to their music, Madness was also known for their distinctive fashion sense. The band members often wore sharp suits and pork pie hats, which became synonymous with the ska subculture.

However, by the end of the 1980s, tensions within the band had begun to mount. In 1986, Madness played their final concert before announcing a hiatus. During this time, several members of the band pursued solo projects.

In 1992, Madness reunited to play a series of concerts and released a new album, 'Mad Not Mad'. While the album was not as commercially successful as their previous releases, it helped to reignite interest in the band. Since then, Madness has continued to tour and record music, releasing several successful albums, including 'The Liberty of Norton Folgate' and 'Can't Touch Us Now'.

Throughout their career, Madness has maintained a strong following in the UK and around the world. Their music has been celebrated for its humour, energy, and catchy melodies, and they continue to be regarded as one of the most important bands of the Ska revival movement.
