The Genesis Scottish Open is part of the Rolex Series on the DP World Tour, marking it as one of the premium events on the tour, alongside the BMW PGA Championship, Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
The Scottish Open has featured some top talents in world golf in the past, such as Francesco Molinari, and British favourites Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood.
Some top names have also been crowned champions before, with the likes of Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson, Min Woo Lee, Rickie Fowler, Bernd Wiesberger, and reigning champion Xander Schauffele all tasting glory at the tournament.
And with The Open Championship coming the week following the Scottish Open, a lot of the top players use the competition as warm-up for the PGA Tour’s major.
The first Scottish Open golf tournament held as part of the European Tour was in 1972. It was played at Downfield Golf Club in Dundee and was won by Neil Coles.
It was held the next year at the iconic Old Course at St Andrew's, with Graham Marsh coming away as the victor.
Unfortunately, after the 1973 edition, the tournament was cancelled due to television coverage not being arranged for the 1974 competition. The European Tour would be without the Scottish Open until 1986.
Its revival in 1986 saw it take over the Glasgow Open, which had been held from 1983-1985 at Haggs Castle Golf Club.
The first time the tournament was held the week before The Open was in 1987, and it has been kept that way ever since, only with the location being changed multiple times.
The Scottish Open has been held at some of Scotland’s most prestigious courses, with St Andrews already named, and other courses such as Gleneagles (1987-1994), and Carnoustie (1995 & 1996).
From 1997 until 2010, the tournament was held at Loch Lomond. The issue for European Players with the tournament being held here was that Loch Lomond is not a links course. And with their leading rivals from the PGA Tour practising for The Open in Ireland on links courses, this put the European Tour players at a disadvantage.
As such, and also partly due to financial difficulties at Loch Lomond, the Scottish Open was moved to only be played at links golf courses, to not only help players on the European Tour better prepare for The Open, but to also promote more high ranked players competing in the tournament.
The current Scottish Open champion is American Xander Schauffele. He has won 10 professional tournaments, with his win here being one of his two on the European Tour.

Since 2019, the Scottish Open has been held at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, which is 20 miles east of Edinburgh.
The Renaissance Club is a world-class golf course located in North Berwick, Scotland. Designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Doak, the course is set on 300 acres of the stunning Scottish coastline and features a challenging 18-hole layout.
The course has been designed to take full advantage of the natural beauty of the area, with rolling fairways, challenging bunkers, and spectacular sea views throughout. The Renaissance Club has been carefully crafted to provide an exciting and memorable golfing experience for all players, while still providing a strong challenge for tour professionals.
In addition to the spectacular golf course, the Renaissance Club also features a state-of-the-art clubhouse, complete with luxurious amenities and world-class dining options. The clubhouse offers stunning views of the course and the surrounding coastline.
The par for the course is 71 and features four par fives, with the longest hole being 601 yards, as well as five par threes, with the shortest being 148 yards.
As well as hosting the Scottish Open since 2019, it has also held the Scottish Senior Open in 2017, and the Ladies Scottish Open in 2019 and 2020.
The Scottish Open will continue to be held at the Renaissance Club until 2026.
Despite hosting players from both the DP World Tour and the more renowned PGA Tour, the Scottish Open seems to suit the European players more so than American.
This is most likely down to the fact that America does not feature many links courses, so therefore the players from there aren’t as used to the way these courses play.
A links course differs from that of the other styles of courses, in that it is more natural and doesn’t have so many man-made features. This adds a high degree of difficulty to the course.
Scotland is famed for its links courses. The country is regarded as the “home of golf”, and the first courses to appear in the country were links courses.
St Andrews is one of the best golf courses in the world, and is possibly the most famous link course in the world, with the famed Old Course a must-play for any golfer, and a dream course for tour professionals to really test themselves.
