New Order is an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1980. The band consists of singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris, and keyboardist and guitarist Gillian Gilbert.
The band was formed out of the ashes of Joy Division, following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. After Curtis' death, the remaining members of Joy Division decided to continue making music under a new name and with a new approach. The result was New Order, a band that combined the dark, moody sound of Joy Division with upbeat dance rhythms and synthesizer-driven melodies.
New Order's early music was heavily influenced by the post-punk and new-wave movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band's first single, 'Ceremony', was written while Curtis was still alive, but it was not released until after his death. New Order's first album, 'Movement', was released in 1981 and featured a sound that was similar to Joy Division's but with a more experimental edge.
Over the course of their career, New Order evolved their sound, incorporating elements of electronica, house, and techno into their music. The band's 1983 single 'Blue Monday' became one of the biggest-selling 12-inch singles of all time and helped establish New Order as pioneers of the dance-rock genre.
Despite personnel changes and the occasional hiatus, New Order has remained active over the years, releasing a string of successful albums and singles. The band has also had a significant impact on popular culture, influencing a wide range of artists across multiple genres.
New Order are yet to announce tour dates in 2024.
