Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) began in Birmingham, England, in 1970, as an experimental project led by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood of The Move, with drummer Bev Bevan. Their vision was to combine rock music with orchestral arrangements, blending strings, keyboards, and electronic effects to create a unique sound that could carry on the experimental legacy of The Beatles.

ELO's first two albums, The Electric Light Orchestra (1971) and ELO 2 (1973), garnered moderate attention but faced lineup changes, most notably with the departure of co-founder Roy Wood. Lynne took the reins as primary songwriter, steering the band toward a more polished, accessible style. ELO found global success with On the Third Day (1973) and Eldorado (1974), where Lynne’s lush arrangements and catchy melodies started to define their sound.

The band's peak came in the mid-1970s to early 1980s with a string of hit albums, including Face the Music (1975), A New World Record (1976), and Out of the Blue (1977), featuring iconic hits like "Evil Woman," "Livin' Thing," and "Mr. Blue Sky." Their concerts became legendary for their elaborate stage setups, often featuring laser light shows and orchestral elements that brought their distinctive sound to life.

In the early 1980s, ELO continued to enjoy chart success with albums like Discovery (1979) and Time (1981), but by the mid-1980s, Lynne felt creatively exhausted with the project. The band went on hiatus after the release of Balance of Power (1986), and Lynne shifted focus to producing for artists like George Harrison and Tom Petty, as well as being part of the supergroup Traveling Wilburys.

Interest in ELO revived in the 2000s, and Lynne returned with Zoom (2001) and later Alone in the Universe (2015) under the banner of Jeff Lynne’s ELO. In 2017, Lynne and ELO were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy. The revived lineup, led by Lynne, has since continued to tour, delighting fans with both classic hits and new material.
