The Tour de France was originally created in 1903 in order to gain more readers for cycling magazine, L'Auto. As the Tour gained prominence and popularity, the race was lengthened and gained more international participation. It is one of three Grand Tours, which also include the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España.
The race is traditionally held in July, where 20 to 22 teams of eight riders compete to win the coveted general classification among other classifications. Today, it is the oldest and most prestigious bicycle race in the entire world.
