We’re champing at the bit to get back on the road, but looks like we’re gonna have to hold tight for a while. I have a knee injury which will have to be dealt with first."

The Pretenders is a highly influential rock band that emerged during the late 1970s. Led by the charismatic and talented vocalist Chrissie Hynde, the band's mix of punk, new wave, and rock influences garnered them critical acclaim and commercial success.

Origins

Formed in March 1978 in Hereford, England, The Pretenders initially consisted of Hynde, James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon, and Martin Chambers. Hynde, who had previous experience as a music journalist and occasional performer, provided a distinctive and powerful voice to the band's sound. Honeyman-Scott's skilled guitar work, Farndon's melodic bass lines, and Chambers' dynamic drumming solidified The Pretenders' unique musical style.

Debut Album

The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1980, propelled them into the international spotlight. It featured hit songs like "Brass in Pocket" and "Kid" and showcased the band's skilful songwriting, blending catchy melodies with a raw, punk-infused edge. The Pretenders' music resonated with audiences and helped define the new wave movement of the time.

Setbacks

Tragically, the band faced early setbacks with the deaths of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 due to drug-related issues and Farndon in 1983 also due to drug-related complications. Despite these losses, Hynde continued to lead The Pretenders, recruiting new members and maintaining the band's momentum.
