No. 8: “Dead Boys”
“Dead Boys” is from Sam Fender’s debut EP of the same name. The song is dedicated to one of his friends who sadly committed suicide, and the themes of grief and mental health are evident in the song’s lyrics and melancholic tone. Not only does the song have an important subject matter, but it has a powerful and cathartic chorus.
Sam was hesitant to release the song at first, not wanting to capitalise on the sensitive topic of suicide, but has spoken about how he feels it has helped people to open up about their own experiences with male suicide and depression.
No. 7: “Spit Of You”
The main theme of “Spit Of You” is Sam Fender’s relationship with his father, and how much he sees himself in him as he grows older. It’s definitely a song that will resonate with listeners who might have a difficult relationship with their parents, or see a lot of their habits and mannerisms in themselves.
The song starts out with a soft guitar riff which slowly builds into a cinematic and anthemic chorus, with Sam’s signature indie rock sound. The music video is just as poignant, depicting Sam and actor Stephen Graham playing father and son.
No. 6: “Aye”
“Aye” is a song that perfectly encapsulates what Sam Fender’s discography is all about – stories about working class, Northern people presented in anthemic, catchy indie songs. The song is on the Seventeen Going Under album, and it does not shy away from talking about class disparity, which is a topic Sam has been vocal about throughout his career.
The song is angsty, and you can sense that through the thumping drums and punchy delivery. While the song is about the woes of the underdog, it has an optimistic tone, celebrating resilience and self-reliance. It’s a track that is sure to sound great live, with high energy and lyrics perfect for singing along to.

Yet another of Sam Fender’s moody tunes with a powerful story, “The Borders” tells the story of two boys who grow up together and then go their separate ways. Reminiscent of The Killers or Bruce Springsteen, the song is emotional and raw, showcasing Sam Fender’s talent for storytelling through song lyrics.
No. 4: “Play God”
“Play God" was Sam Fender’s debut song, released all the way back in 2017. It shows how singing about politics and societal issues is so ingrained in Sam Fender’s songwriting, as the song is about the uncertainty of the future after recent political unrest in the UK and US.
While the lyrics tackle themes of power, manipulation, and control, the instrumentation matches perfectly with the anger of the song. Driving guitars and drums increase when Sam’s voice gets louder, making it a song you have to listen to with the volume up!
No. 3: “Will We Talk?”
“Will We Talk?” was the second single of Sam Fender’s debut album Hypersonic Missiles. The song’s subject matter is different from his usual political themes, detailing the story of a one-night stand with a more lighthearted tone.
Sam has said the song was inspired by the indie clubs he used to go to when he was younger. The song is perfect to dance to, with a catchy, driving beat. Sam often opens his live shows with this track, starting off his sets with a bang.

The lead single from the album of the same name, “Hypersonic Missiles” is another great example of Sam’s political songwriting abilities. Convinced the world is going to end and that everyone is going mad, Sam laments about global unrest and the inevitability of war.
The title, "Hypersonic Missiles,” is a reference to nuclear weapons. And, just like all of Sam Fender’s classics, the sound is tense, with catchy guitars and drums, harkening back to older rock musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.
No. 1: “Seventeen Going Under”
What track could possibly be Sam Fender’s best song other than “Seventeen Going Under”? The song was voted Hottest Record of The Year 2021 by BBC Radio 1 listeners, making it Sam’s biggest success to date even after a slow start on the charts.
“Seventeen Going Under” has a nostalgic feel and an optimistic quality to it as Sam reminisces on being 17 years old and all the feelings of social unjustness and youthful hope and radicalism that came with it. The song even went viral on TikTok, so it’s one that everyone in the audience of his shows will surely know.
