Stevie Wonder’s Best Songs in Order

No. 10: “Sir Duke”

“Sir Duke” is from the album that many consider Stevie Wonder’s magnum opus – Songs In The Key of Life. In the song, Stevie pays homage to many iconic jazz artists, namely Duke Ellington who had passed away a couple years before. He also references Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in the song.

The song is a tribute to jazz, with a little bit of funk and soul mixed in. Thanks to “Sir Duke,” we can continue to remember and appreciate “some of music's pioneers / That time will not allow us to forget.”

No. 9: “My Cherie Amour”

This song is another one of Stevie’s older hits from his time at Motown records and was co-written with Sylvia Moy and Henry Cosby, who were frequent collaborators at the time. Stevie even recorded Spanish and Italian versions of the song. It’s a haunting, soulful love ballad, and its popularity is credited with the amount of love songs Stevie released in subsequent years.

The song was gaining popularity at the same time that Stevie was on tour in the UK, and Motown released it as a single which quickly climbed the charts. If you’d like to see Stevie Wonder tour the UK in 2025, sign up to our mailing list to be notified when tickets go on sale!

No. 8: “Master Blaster (Jammin’)”

Another ode to an artist that Stevie heavily respected, “Master Blaster” is a reggae-heavy bop dedicated to Bob Marley. The song is tropical and groovy, a perfect addition to his Hotter Than July album that was very successful on the charts.

Stevie Wonder shared a desire for peace with Bob Marley, something they connected over when they met in Jamaica in 1975. The two wanted to hold a concert together, but Bob Marley unfortunately passed away in 1981, one year after this song was released.

No. 7: “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life”

Another of Stevie’s soft ballads, “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” has received many accolades including being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and part of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song is an expression of undying love, written for his first wife Syreeta Wright. Even though the couple later divorced, the song lives on as one of the most well-regarded love ballads of all time that other huge artists like Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra have covered.

No. 6: “I Was Made To Love Her”

"I Was Made to Love Her" is a soulful classic by Stevie Wonder, released in 1967 as part of his album of the same name. Written by Wonder, along with his frequent collaborators Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy, the track features Stevie’s trademark harmonica riffs as a throwback to his ‘Little Stevie’ days in the early 60s.

The song became one of Stevie’s most commercially successful hits, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and further solidifying his reputation as a groundbreaking artist. "I Was Made to Love Her" became an anthem of joy and longing, its infectious groove continuing to resonate with listeners across generations.

No. 5: “Higher Ground”

While this song only received modes chart success in the UK, since then it has come to be regarded as one of Stevie Wonder’s best songs of all time. The song was recorded just before Stevie was in a near-fatal car accident in 1973 that left him in a coma.

It was as if he had a premonition about the accident, as the lyrics of the song are highly spiritual and about being able to take a second chance at life. The Innervisions album was released only three days before his accident.

No. 4: “As”

Another song from the fantastic album Songs In The Key of Life, “As” is on first listen about a lover singing to their partner, but the song could also be interpreted as God speaking to humanity. Stevie moved to Ghana after his car accident to focus on humanitarian efforts, which inspired him to write the song.

While many of the songs from The Key of Life were very successful, “As” remains one of his major life achievements. George Michael and Mary J. Blige also recorded a cover of the song in 1998.

No. 3: “Isn’t She Lovely”

“Isn’t She Lovely” was originally written for his daughter Aisha Morris, celebrating her birth with recordings of Stevie bathing her making its way onto the song. Despite the song’s popularity, it was never released as a single as Stevie did not want to shorten its six-minute length.

The song is such a beautiful expression of love, towards his daughter and his partner at the time, Yolanda Simmons. Stevie Wonder is one of the very best at love songs, and “Isn’t She Lovely” is Stevie expressing his love in yet another way that has captivated listeners over generations.

No. 2: “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”

The song’s catchy melody, dynamic brass section, and rhythmic drive, paired with Stevie’s powerful, soulful vocals, make it a timeless anthem. Lyrically, it’s a declaration of complete, unconditional love. Stevie sings about giving himself fully to a partner, offering a "signed, sealed, delivered" promise of devotion.

"Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard R&B chart and number three on the pop charts. The song also marked a significant shift in Stevie’s musical direction, foreshadowing the creative maturity and brilliance that would define his later work.

No. 1: “Superstition”

Definitely Stevie Wonder’s most recognisable song, with opening lyrics everyone can sing, “Superstition” has to be his number one best song. The track is a fusion of funk, soul, and rock, showcasing Wonder's versatility as both a musician and a songwriter. With its infectious, syncopated clavinet riff and tight rhythm section, "Superstition" became a defining anthem of the 1970s.

Lyrically, "Superstition" critiques the folly of believing in superstitions and irrational beliefs. Wonder warns against trusting in luck, fate, or any supernatural forces that lack logical or empirical basis, urging listeners to rely on their own judgment.
