Sugababes dominated the UK charts back in the early 2000s, joining the likes of Girls Aloud and Spice Girls as some of the biggest UK girl groups of the time. No. 10: ‘Flatline’
The story of ‘Flatline’ is the ultimate triumph for original Sugababes members Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Siobhan Donaghy. The song was released originally under the group name ‘MKS’ as the girls did not have the rights over the Sugababes name, but was universally loved by fans for its pop rock sound and R&B vocals. After six years of legal battles, ‘Flatline’ was officially released under the Sugababes name and is a key part of the group’s upcoming tour.
No. 9: ‘Ugly’
From the 2005 album Taller In More Ways, ‘Ugly’ is a midtempo song that has the same message as songs like ‘Beautiful’ by Christina Aguilera, that everyone is beautiful no matter what. It was one of the last songs released before original member Mutya Buena left the band that year. It’s an emotional and empowering song, and was even used in schools in Wales to promote diversity.
No. 8: ‘Jungle’
‘Jungle’ is the most recent single released by Sugababes, featuring all three original members Keisha, Mutya, and Siobhan. The song is definitely reminiscent of the group’s earlier work, with a garage and alternative pop sound and pulsing beat, about escaping the 9-5 grind and “bringing out the animal.” It definitely makes fans excited for their upcoming album!
No. 7: ‘Freak Like Me’
Originally by Adina Howard, ‘Freak Like Me’ is a cover song, with the Sugababes version sounding much more like an R&B and rock track. It’s from their 2002 album Angels with Dirty Faces, the first to feature Heidi Range once Siobhan Donaghy had left the lineup. It was Sugababes’ first number one single, and was even called the best single of the year by The Guardian.
No. 6: ‘Overload’
‘Overload’ was Sugababes’ debut single, sung by all three original members. It was released on their first album One Touch in 2000, and was co-written by the members which was common for the original lineup. It combined their now-signature sound of pop and R&B, with a snappy drum beat and smooth vocals. It’s remarkably sophisticated despite how young the girls were at the time.
No. 5: ‘Hole In The Head’
From their 2003 third album, Three, ‘Hole In The Head’ is a Heidi-era song showcasing their quirky, pop and R&B fusion sound with an upbeat tempo and funky electronic effects. Critics praised the song for its attitude and sass, and fans loved it too as it spent 13 weeks on the UK charts.
No. 4: ‘About You Now’
By the time ‘About You Now’ came out the group was helmed by Keisha, Heidi, and new member Amelle Berrabah. Lineup changes never dulled Sugababes’ stardom though, and ‘About You Now’ remains one of their most popular songs for its pure pop catchiness. While a controversial figure now, at the time its Dr Luke production was praised, calling it the best Sugababes single since ‘Round Round.’
No. 3: ‘Too Lost in You’
Most people nowadays will remember the prominence of ‘Too Lost in You’ on the soundtrack for Love Actually, but it was also an incredibly successful single and one of their very best. It’s a cover of a French song called ‘Quand j'ai peur de tout,’ and is a sensual R&B ballad with a catchy hook that became an essential part of their discography and live set.
No. 2: ‘Round Round’
‘Round Round’ is one of Sugababes’ most recognisable songs, with Keisha, Mutya, and Heidi singing. The song reached number one on the UK charts and is often credited with reshaping British pop music at the time. It has an incredibly catchy chorus, with the lyrics “round round baby, round round” guaranteed to be going around your head. The music video is just as great, making it an iconic piece of British pop.
No. 1: ‘Push The Button’
‘Push The Button’ remains Sugababes’ most popular song, and for good reason. It’s flirty, cheeky, and a little edgy just like Sugababes, and it's no wonder it debuted at the top of the UK singles chart and stayed there for three weeks. It’s a great club song, uptempo and electropop in style, but still has those classic R&B elements Sugababes are known for.
