Stormzy’s Best Songs in Order

No. 10: “Cold”

“Cold” is from Stormzy’s debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer. A common thread among many of Stormzy’s songs is the theme of social activism and celebration of Black pride, and “Cold” is no different with lyrics like “All my young Black kings, rise up man.”

The song is fun and vibrant, and paired with Stormzy’s hard-hitting and unapologetic rap style, it’s a grime track that set Stormzy apart from the beginning as an artist who was not afraid to take risks and do things differently.

No. 9: “Hide & Seek”

Stormzy took yet another different turn with “Hide & Seek,” released on his 2022 album, This Is What I Mean. Unusually, the song is stripped-back and soulful in its production, creating a raw and vulnerable atmosphere.

This choice made the single a fan favourite, with introspective and emotional lyrics about self reflection, mental health, and searching for peace within himself. A departure from his usual brash style, the song let fans in on a more thoughtful and reflective side of Stormzy.

No. 8: “Know Me From”

Lyrically, "Know Me From" is a declaration of Stormzy's success and self-assurance. He touches on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the UK music scene. The song is both a celebration of his achievements and a statement to those who may have doubted or underestimated him in the past.

From his 2019 album, Heavy Is the Head, the track blends grime and hip-hop to make a quintessential Stormzy track, with a blend of gritty realism and celebratory energy, making it a standout on the album.

No. 7: “Wiley Flow”

“Wiley Flow” is an homage to legendary British grime MC, Wiley, that includes interpolations from the artist’s songs. Often called the “Godfather of Grime,” Wiley is someone Stormzy clearly admires and takes inspiration from.

The production of the track also pays homage to classic grime, with hard-hitting drums and rapid-fire, punchy bars, giving it an aggressive vibe that Stormzy is known for. Even though the song is classic grime, it shows Stormzy’s versatility and knowledge of the genre and those who came before him.

No. 6: “Blinded By Your Grace, Pt.2 (featuring MNEK)”

Both part one and two of “Blinded By Your Grace” feature on Stormzy’s debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, and the song quickly became his second highest charting single after release. The song uses religious imagery in its lyrics, conveying themes of redemption, divine grace, and the overwhelming love and protection that Stormzy feels from his faith.

The chorus includes vocals from British singer MNEK, adding a gospel feel that elevates the themes of Christianity. The melodic singing mixed with rap adds to the introspective and worshipful lyrics, again reminding us that Stormzy will always keep us on our toes.

No. 5: “Crown”

The song touches on themes of pressure, self-doubt, and the challenges of maintaining a sense of identity and purpose while navigating fame and responsibility. In "Crown," Stormzy explores the idea of the weight that comes with success, symbolised by the metaphor of a crown.

Stormzy, while known for his aggressive and brash style, is very talented at writing introspective, raw lyrics too, and “Crown” is yet another example of his honesty and openness.

No. 4: “Shut Up”

“Shut Up” was released as an independent single in 2015, produced by XTC and written by Stormzy. It climbed to number eight in the UK charts, and there was even a campaign to get the single to be the Christmas number one. Originally a freestyle uploaded to YouTube, its popularity pushed Stormzy to release it as a single.

Becoming one of his most iconic and successful tracks, “Shut Up” is confident and bold, telling those who speak badly about him to “shut up,” literally. It has that classic defiance and bravado fans love about Stormzy, with clever word play and punchlines throughout the song.

No. 3: “Big For Your Boots”

Released as the lead single on Gang Signs & Prayer, “Big For Your Boots” is one of Stormzy’s most recognisable tracks. At the time it was one of his highest charting songs, helping to push him into the spotlight of the UK music scene.

The music video was also praised for having the bulk of Stormzy’s crew made up of successful women, from TV and radio presenters to other singers and creatives. Some of the most notable names are RAYE, Maya Jama, and Grace F Victory.

No. 2: “Own It (Featuring Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy)”

“Own It” is a legendary collaboration between Stormzy, Burna Boy, and perhaps unexpectedly, Ed Sheeran. Stormzy’s South London flow is paired with a Dancehall feel, making for a slick and groovy song that became his third number one single.

Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, and Burna Boy each contribute their own unique flavour to the track. Stormzy’s verses focus on owning his achievements and asserting his place in the music industry, while Ed Sheeran’s catchy hook adds a more melodic, pop-driven element to the song. Burna Boy’s verse infuses the track with an Afrobeat influence that blends seamlessly with the other styles.

No. 1: “Vossi Bop”

Stormzy’s first number one single, “Vossi Bop” is still his most well-known and iconic song. It includes the politically aware and daring lyrics he has become known for, coming for Boris Johnson in the song. It’s a part he likes to make the audience at his live shows sing along with.

It’s minimalistic and bouncy, making it incredibly catchy along with the clever lyrics. The song is also notable for its fun, carefree vibe, which contrasts with some of Stormzy's more serious and introspective work. It's a party track, but it also serves as a statement of his position at the top of the grime and UK rap scenes.
