Stevie Wonder’s Best Albums in Order

No. 10: ‘A Time to Love’

A Time to Love was released in 2005 and remains Stevie Wonder’s most recent studio album. Fans have been waiting a long time for a new release from Stevie, but this album did still include some great songs. Single ‘So What The Fuss’ features Prince on guitar and En Vogue on backing vocals.

The song ‘From the Bottom of My Heart’ won Stevie his fourth Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy award, There is also a feature from his daughter Aisha Morris, on the song ‘Positivity.’

No. 9: ‘For Once In My Life’

Stevie Wonder’s 10th studio album, ‘For Once in My Life’ was released when he was just 18 years old under the Motown label. It’s the first album on which Stevie has producing credits, showing his growth as an artist as he grew up.

It featured four songs that entered the Billboard Hot 100 including ‘For Once In My Life,’ ‘Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day,’ ‘I Don’t Know Why’ and ‘You Met Your Match.’ The record included a mixture of pop and uptempo songs and ballads, aiding it in its success on the charts.

No. 8: ‘Signed, Sealed & Delivered’

This album was released in 1970 and is one of Stevie Wonder’s most recognisable, particularly for the hit single ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)’ which remains one of his most popular on streaming platforms. Critics at the time praised it for its creativity, Stevie’s soulful voice, and the variety of songs from pop to ballads.

The album also includes a cover of The Beatles’ song ‘We Can Work It Out,’ which managed to reach number 13 on the charts and was loved for it being such a unique addition to the track list.

No. 7: ‘Hotter Than July’

Hotter Than July came after his previous album was commercially unsuccessful, showing the world that Stevie Wonder still had it and could still write hit songs. It was also Stevie Wonder’s most successful album in the UK, debuting at number two on the album charts.

The album’s lead single ‘Master Blaster (Jammin’)’ was inspired by Bob Marley’s reggae music, making the album perfect for summertime. Another notable song is ‘Happy Birthday,’ written to promote the cause of making Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday. It is still regarded as one of his signature songs.

No. 6: ‘Where I’m Coming From’

This album was written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright, Stevie’s backing singer and first wife. It came at a time in his career when Motown records still wanted to maintain tight control over Stevie’s musical content, but Stevie wanted more artistic freedom. This came to a head when upon his 21st birthday, he asked for his contract with Motown to be voided.

Knowing this was coming, Stevie took the opportunity to write whatever he wanted, knowing that Motown would have to accept what he gave them. This led to an album with many social commentary and war-themed songs, along with hit love songs ‘I Wanna Talk To You’ and ‘I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer.’

No. 5: ‘Fulfillingness’ First Finale’

Fulfillingness’ First Finale is considered the fourth of Stevie Wonder’s five albums in his classic period. The commercial success of this album makes it evident how good it was, being his second Album of the Year Grammy win, and winning Best Male Pop Vocal and Best Male Rhythm and Blues Vocal Performance.

The album is personal and self-reflective, but he had not completely foregone social commentary, as the number one single ‘You Haven't Done Nothin’ criticised the Nixon administration heavily. Another notable single was ‘Boogie on Reggae Woman,’ which reached number three on the pop charts and continued his streak of successful songs.

No. 4: ‘Music Of My Mind’

Music Of My Mind marks the start of Stevie Wonder’s full artistic control over his own music, and is widely thought of as the first album in his classic period. The album includes many experimental aspects, such as production from electronic musicians, using synthesizers, and playing all the musical instruments himself.

The album received universal acclaim from critics, and it was successful with all audiences as it peaked at number six on the Billboard R&B chart. The single ‘Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)’ charted the highest, and included a reimagined section of ‘Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer,’ which showed Stevie’s desire to distance himself from Motown’s production.

No. 3: ‘Talking Book’

Talking Book is another album from Stevie Wonder’s classic period, and it’s no wonder fans rate it so highly. It is another album with heavy use of keyboards and synthesizers, and is best known for the inclusion of the legendary single ‘Superstition.’

‘Superstition’ reached number one on the Billboard charts, and has a legacy as one of Stevie Wonder’s most popular songs. The album was so popular it didn’t matter whether you liked R&B or rock, everyone was tuning in to the history that Stevie was making at this time.

No. 2: ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’

Songs In The Key Of Life is another from Stevie Wonder’s classic period, and has many of his most famous songs including ‘Sir Duke,’ ‘As’ and ‘Isn’t She Lovely.’ By this time in his career, Stevie Wonder was one of the most successful artists on the charts with back to back hit albums.

He almost decided to quit making music in favour of philanthropic efforts to aid children with disabilities in Ghana, but changed his mind at the last minute to sign another contract with Motown and continue his career in the music industry. Thankfully this led to the release of Songs In The Key Of Life, which has become Stevie’s signature album.

No. 1: ‘Innervisions’

Innervisions is the album that marked the end of ‘Little Stevie Wonder,’ and the singer’s growth into a mature artist with deeper, more socially conscious songs. It is regarded by many fans as not only his best album, but one of the best of all time. The album contains many themes including drug abuse, systematic racism, and love.

Singles ‘Higher Ground,’ ‘Living for the City,’ and ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing’ topped the charts, and the album was one of his most commercially successful. It is Stevie Wonder’s musical versatility and talent for songwriting that gives Innervisions its legacy, creating a rich and uplifting body of work that has aged beautifully.
