Nottingham Forest Football Club was originally started as a multi-sports club, established in 1865 as Nottingham Forest Football and Bandy Club. The football segment of the club eventually became the most successful and popular initiative which led to their participation in competitions like the FA Cup.

Nottingham Forest's first appearance in the cup came in the 1878-79 season, and have participated in majority of tournaments since. Nottingham Forest's early FA Cup journey is a tale of perseverance and small wins. Nottingham Forest's maiden FA Cup appearance occurred in the 1878-79 season. In the first round they faced Notts County at Beeston Cricket Ground and beat them 3-1.

In the semi finals they were beaten 2-1 by Old Etonians. Although they missed out on a spot in the final it still marks a significant achievement in Forest's early FA Cup story.

Forest's perseverance paid off in 1898 when they reached their first FA Cup final. At Crystal Palace, before a crowd of 62,000 spectators, they faced Derby County. Arthur Capes emerged as the hero, scoring twice, while John McPherson sealed the victory with a late goal. Forest triumphed 3-1, clinching their first FA Cup title and painting their name in football history.

Nottingham Forest have produced some of their best FA Cup moments during the 2024/2025 season. In the Fifth Round against Premier League side Ipswich Town they managed to stay composed and win the penalty shootout. They won 5-4 on penalties after the matched finished 1-1. Ryan Yates scored the equaliser allowing Forest to take Ipswich Town into extra time.

Furthermore in their Third Round match up against Luton Town Forest came back from behind to draw 2-2 and then won 4-2 on penalties. Ramon Sosa scored the crucial equaliser to keep the team in the game.

There are a couple standout moments and goals that Forest fans remember throughout their FA Cup history. One highlight includes Stuart Pearce's free kick v Tottenham Hotspur in the 1991 FA Cup Final.
