Day 1: Seaton Delaval Trophy Day

The opening day features the highly competitive and valuable Class 2 Seat Delaval Handicap Stakes, named after the local village. It pays homage to a horse of the same name, which claimed victory in the 1893 Northumberland Plate.

Day 2: Gosforth Park Cup Night featuring Madness Live After Racing

Why is it called Plate Day?

Northumberland Plate Day began back in 1833 and originally took place on Wednesdays. For many years it was a holiday for local miner workers. The first-ever race was won by a horse called Tomboy.

Back then, the race was known as 'Pitsmen's Derby'. The meeting stopped being a holiday in 1949, and the race was switched to Saturday in 1952. This famous race is now the richest two-mile handicap in the world.

The race is called Northumberland Plate as it's named after the local village, Northumberland, and a horse of the same name.
