Leon Edwards is the current UFC Welterweight champion, after sensationally yet stunningly beating Kamaru Usman for the title in August 2022.
As the champion, he has the obligation to defend the title he has worked so hard for. There is a list of fighters who will want to take it off of him, but the man who he beat for the title gets priority over the others.
Read on to find out what we know of his first title defence, including where his next fight will take place.
Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman 3
Leon Edwards shocked the UFC world by knocking out Kamaru Usman in the dying embers of the fifth round in their second fight against each other on 20th August 2022.
Edwards was losing the fight heading into the fifth and final round, so he went out swinging. Luckily for him, one of his kicks connected and he got the KO/TKO win with just under a minute left in the bout.
So far, the former champion, Usman, has been gracious in defeat, congratulating Edwards and essentially moving on. But expect that to change.
After a long time of silence with only rumours of the trilogy fight being set, it has now been made official that Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman 3 will be happening in 2023 at UFC 286.
It was expected that this fight would take priority as it is usually the case that when a former champion loses their belt, they get the rematch.
Where Could Leon Edwards’ Next Fight Take Place?
It was announced in December 2022 that the UFC would be coming back to the UK and will be putting on their biggest UK event to date with UFC 286.
There had been a lot of talk about holding a major UFC event in the UK again, with Dana White previously saying that he intends to take the trilogy fight between Edwards and Usman to the UK.
Edwards himself also called for the potential rematch to happen on home soil. The UFC has fought at various arenas around the UK, but more commonly is hosted at the O2 Arena.
When Could Leon Edwards' Next Fight Take Place?
As mentioned, the UFC most commonly goes to the London O2 Arena when hosting an event, and that is where UFC 286 will be taking place as well.
