No. 10: ‘Shallow’
Lady Gaga has been in her acting era for a while now, with most of her recent releases being soundtrack albums. Her role in A Star Is Born showed the world that she has the acting chops, and ‘Shallow’ was a hugely successful song featuring Bradley Cooper. It’s a power ballad song, showcasing Gaga’s emotive and powerful voice.
Famously, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed the song together at the 2019 Academy Awards, showing the electric chemistry between the two as they sang live. Thanks to the song, Lady Gaga ended up winning a Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA all in the same year.
No. 9: ‘Marry The Night’
‘Marry The Night’ was the final single from Lady Gaga’s second album, Born This Way. Strangely, the song was originally released as promotion for the game, Farmville, but became a fan favourite over the years for its electronic, dance pop sound. It’s one of Gaga’s best songs about partying and nightlife, the topics that defined her early career.
No. 8: ‘Poker Face’
‘Poker Face’ is one of those Gaga songs with a hook so catchy it’ll be a week before you get it out of your head. Everybody instantly recognises the robotic chorus with heavy synths and electronic sound, matching perfectly with the previous single, ‘Just Dance.’
Like many of Gaga’s songs, ‘Poker Face’ has a lot of innuendo in the lyrics, with this song being all about teasing and bisexuality with the running gambling metaphor. It makes it fun and a little cheeky, which is what little monsters love so much about Gaga’s music.
No. 7: ‘Judas’
Is it really a Lady Gaga song if she doesn’t ruffle some feathers? ‘Judas’ scandalised some religious groups due to its heavy Catholic theming, from the music video to the single artwork. She didn’t let that phase her however, as she still performed the song on television and on tour multiple times despite backlash.
Gaga is a pro at catchy hooks, and ‘Judas’ is yet another example of this. The themes of the song are – of course – betrayal and forgiveness, about a toxic relationship as she uses the betrayal of Judas as a metaphor. The song’s dark themes and synths compliment the metaphor perfectly.
No. 6: ‘Applause’
The ARTPOP album had critics divided, but ‘Applause’ was topping the charts just like every Gaga single before it. Gaga has said the song’s lyrics are about how the cheers of her fans helped her continue performing during the Born This Way tour despite her hip injury.
The lyrics also mention art and culture movements, channelling Gaga’s ideology that pop is art and not just a vapid, worthless product. The pumping synths and energetic chorus make it an amazing dance song and even more incredible to hear live!
No. 5: ‘Telephone’ ft. Beyoncé
‘Telephone’ is a very iconic song, especially because of Beyoncé’s feature and appearance in the music video. Two queens of pop and dance came together, and you can absolutely tell from the intense choreography and incredibly catchy hook. It’s a simple concept – they just want to dance, not pick up the phone!
The music video is particularly interesting, with great reference to the movie Kill Bill when the two singers drive away in their very own P**** Wagon. The music video follows the story of Gaga in prison after the events of the ‘Paparazzi’ music video, with outfits designed by Thierry Mugler and Brian Lichtenberg.
No. 4: ‘Just Dance’
Not many artists can brag that they’ve had a whole video game franchise named after their song, but Lady Gaga can with ‘Just Dance.’ It’s a feel-good clubbing song, with lyrics about being intoxicated on the dancefloor, and it clearly resonated with many people back in 2008 during difficult economic times.
The track is, unsurprisingly, among the best-selling singles of all time with 10 million copies sold. It was also Lady Gaga’s first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording, and really the song that catapulted her into fame and recognition, making it a very special song in her career.
No. 3: ‘Alejandro’
If you needed any more convincing that Lady Gaga is good at writing earworms, the American Psychological Association called ‘Alejandro’ one of the world’s catchiest songs. The europop beat made the song incredibly successful in Europe – perhaps also because of the familiar Hispanic names used in the song.
No. 2: ‘Bad Romance’
‘Bad Romance’ had a truly iconic start. Even though the demo was leaked before the song’s release, Lady Gaga debuted the song on the runway at Alexander McQueen’s 2010 Paris Fashion Week show. Years later, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the lyrics Rah, rah-ah-ah-ah / Roma, roma-ma / Gaga, ooh-la-la / Want your bad romance.”
The song’s provocative lyrics and catchy chorus highlight the desire for both passion and control, with Gaga declaring she wants a "bad romance." The track blends dark, edgy beats with glamorous pop, establishing a uniquely ‘Gaga’ sound.
No. 1: ‘Born This Way’
‘Born This Way,’ released in 2011, is a powerful anthem that celebrates self-acceptance, individuality, and embracing one's true identity. The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to love themselves unconditionally, regardless of societal expectations or prejudices. It became an empowering rallying cry for the LGBTQ+ community, promoting inclusivity and pride.
With its dance-pop sound and upbeat melody, the track conveys a message of freedom and authenticity. "Born This Way" became a global hit, earning widespread praise for its bold message and inspiring millions to stand tall and unapologetically be themselves.
