Where is Fontwell Racecourse and what is its history?
Situated in the village of Fontwell, East Sussex, between Chichester and Arundel, the racetrack is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
The racecourse has the only remaining figure of eight layout of jumps left in the UK and is steeped in history.
The track was founded by racehorse trainer Alfred Day in 1924 after he purchased land there, laying out the steeplechase in its distinctive figure of eight shape to best utilise space.
In 1949, the Queen’s horse Monaveen won the Chichester Handicap race at Fontwell.

Ladies Evening
Date: 30th August | Gates open: 2.25pm
Known for its Style Awards, Ladies Evening is one of the best-known events Fontwell Racecourse puts on. It’s the chance to put on your very best outfit - and that all-important hat - before competing to win the award for best dressed.
Sip on something fizzy while you bet on the horses - it might just be the day that you pick a winner.
The fun doesn’t stop there because there’s also a performance from Revival, an ABBA tribute band, as well as a DJ set from V2 Radio. Get ready to dance the night away!
Family Fun Raceday
Date: 8th September | Gates open: 11.30am (TBC)
Not sure which Fontwell Park Racecourse events the whole family will enjoy? This is one that they certainly will.
Fontwell Park’s Family Fun Day is made with little ones in mind. From a bouncy castle to face painting, they’ll be entertained all day.
If they love dinosaurs then even better, because there’s going to be roaming animatronic dinosaurs on-site, as well as a giant dinosaur egg for the kids to investigate.
And don’t forget the racing, which children will love to watch, while mum and dad have a flutter.
Southern National Raceday
Date: 17th November | Gates open: 10.30am (TBC)
This is one not to miss at Fontwell races! With its very special horseshoe-shaped jump track, this event is one of the most prestigious in the racing calendar.
Three miles and three furlongs long, this adrenaline-packed race, which is aired on ITV, is a huge test for the horse and jockey that eventually stampedes to victory.
