The FIM World Supercross Championship had its inaugural season in 2022 after separating from the American-based AMA Supercross Championship.
The roots of the FIM World Supercross Championship date back to 1987, when the Rodil Trophy was elevated to World Championship status. It was renamed the FIM World Supercross Championship in 1992.
From 2002-2006, the series was partnered with American-owner promoters Clear Channel Entertainment, which saw the championship change name to the World Supercross GP and was staged in multiple locations, such as Switzerland, Spain, Holland, Canada, and most importantly, the United States.
At the time, the US already had its own prestigious national championship, and ahead of the 2008 season, the FIM World Supercross GP merged with the American-based AMA Supercross Championship to form the Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship.
The move brought back the World Championship label to the American series but also saw the championship moved to be based fully in the US.
It wasn’t until 2022 that the FIM World Supercross Championship would split AMA. It was then rebooted by Australian promoters SX-Global.
2022 saw the first season of the new FIM World Supercross Championship, and featured just two rounds, one in Britain at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and one in Australia, at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.
