Key Moments in England vs. India History at Emirates Old Trafford

1990 – India show competitiveness

Despite challenging conditions and a strong England side, India fought hard in this Test. They were led by Mohammad Azharuddin, who scored a fighting 121 in India’s first innings. This was a remarkable innings under pressure.

The match was affected by rain, which ultimately led to a draw. However, India's resilience in the face of England’s strong performance made it a memorable contest. This match was notable as it represented a time when India was beginning to show competitiveness on English soil, especially against strong opposition.

2014 – Chaos and India defeat

In 2014, the match at Old Trafford was the 4th Test, and while India had gained a win during the 2nd Test at Lord’s, it wasn’t looking promising for them. India collapsed to 8/4 by the sixth over, and despite fighting knocks from captain MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin, they were bowled out for 152. England scored 367 in reply, a 215-run lead.

Not only was the match delayed for 30 minutes at the start due to rain, but England bowler Stuart Broad suffered a broken nose during the match due to a serve from Varun Aaron, which took him out for the rest of the match. Despite losing one of their best players, England still managed to win it.
