Origins of Crystal Palace in the FA Cup

Crystal Palace's first entry into the FA Cup was in the early 1900s, but they were not particularly successful in the competition in those early years. The club, like many others, initially played in regional competitions before properly making their mark in the FA Cup.

When Crystal Palace became a part of the Football League in 1920, their participation in the FA Cup became more significant. During this time, the team began to establish itself as a competitive side in the FA Cup, though their best performances came in later decades.

Early FA Cup Milestones

One significant moment in Crystal Palace FA Cup history came in 1913, when the final was being held at the Palace stadium. The stadium was nearly destroyed when suffragettes attempted to blow up the stands as part of their campaign for women’s suffrage.

In these early years of Palace’s history, they made waves at the FA Cup by consistently finishing in top half of the table and even making it to the quarter-finals. Particularly in the 60s and 70s Palace managed to gain promotion and play exciting matches against Real Madrid and Manchester United.

While the team have bounced between the first and second divisions of the league throughout the years, as of 2010 they have been a steadfast part of the Premier League, participating in all major competitions.

Best Crystal Palace FA Cup Moments

One early memorable moment for Palace was in 1975, when the team beat Chelsea 4-0. This was a huge victory, as Chelsea was a top-flight club, and Palace’s 4-0 victory was a major shock. The win helped solidify Palace’s reputation as a team capable of defeating higher division sides in the competition.

Crystal Palace's most iconic FA Cup moment came in 1990 when they reached the final against Manchester United. The first match ended in a 3-3 draw, with Palace taking a 2-0 lead before United fought back. The replay was held at Wembley, where Palace lost 1-0, but despite the loss it remains a thrilling moment in Palace’s history for making it so far in the competition.

The most recent time Crystal Palace was in the FA Cup final was in 2016, when once again Palace faced Manchester United at Wembley Stadium. Unfortunately the team lost 0-1, but it still remains a defining moment for Palace as they managed to claw their way up to the top.
