Premier League sides have been fairly dominant in the Champions League in the last five years, with four of those five finals featuring an English side, and on two occasions being an all-English final.

Now, at the 2022/23 Champions League Semi-Final stage, with only four teams left to fight for European glory, we are taking a look and updating our previous predictions.

Which English teams still remain in the competition, and what can we expect from them going forward? Find out who the Premier League’s best have got in the CL Semi-Final, as well as our predictions for how far each team will go in the competition.

Who are the English teams in the Champions League?

As usual, there will be four English teams in the Champions League this season. They are:

All four teams made it through their groups, with only Liverpool not finishing at the top of theirs.

Our Predictions for the English Sides

Manchester City | Prediction: Champions

Current Status: Still in competition | Semi-final Opponent: Real Madrid

Last year, Man City fell victim to eventual champions, Real Madrid, in the semi-final, as the two sides played out one of the greatest Champions League ties of all time.

But this year could very well be their year. Pep Guardiola has already cemented himself as Man City’s greatest manager of all time, but he has that hunger for the one trophy he hasn’t won yet with the Citizens.

The same goes for the players, in particular their captain, Kevin De Bruyne. Just like Pep, KDB’s list of accomplishments has already made him a City great. A Champions League winners medal could just about put him at the top of the list.

In the group stage, City went unbeaten with four wins and two draws. They scored 14 goals and only conceded twice.

In the Round of 16, they came up against RB Leipzig, who are no pushover, something they showed in the first leg, holding City to a 1-1 draw.

The second leg, though, really showed why the Citizens are one of the favourites to win it all, demolishing Leipzig 7-0 at the Etihad, with five goals coming from star striker Erling Haaland.

The Quarter-final draw produced a tough matchup for them, coming up against fellow Champions League favourites, Bayern Munich. However, The Sky Blues made short work of the German giants at the Etihad Stadium, beating them 3-0 on the day.

The second leg finished in a 1-1 draw thanks to an Erling Haaland away goal, sending City through to the penultimate round of the CL.

And it seems that history could be destined to repeat itself for the Cityzens this year, as they face off against last year's semi-final foes Real Madrid who emphatically dumped them out of the competition in 2022.

The first leg saw the two sides play out a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. Now, heading to the Etihad, the draw swings in City's favour.

Chelsea | Prediction: Quarter-finals

Current status: Out of competition | Beaten in/ by: Quarter-Final, Real Madrid

Chelsea had possibly the most favourable run to the knockout rounds, with probably the easiest group from the English sides.

The Blues made use of that fact by finishing top of their group by three points over AC Milan. They had four wins, one draw and one loss, scoring 10 goals and conceding four.

Their opponents in the Round of 16 were Borussia Dortmund. This was a hard tie to call as it seemed like to fairly even sides. It seemed like it could be a case of the home side winning, with the one to score the most at home getting the win.

And that is exactly what happened. The first leg in Dortmund saw the home side win 1-0. The reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge swung the way of Chelsea, as they did exactly what they needed to do, scoring twice without conceding to win the tie 2-1.

A good result from them there has turned into a daunting challenge for the next round as they have been drawn against Real Madrid in the Quarter-final. Last season these two sides played out an instant classic tie at the same stage.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the Spanish juggernaut proved far too much for them to compete with. Madrid emerged victorious in both legs, scoring two unanswered goals in each match, sending the Blues crashing out of the competition with a whimper.

Liverpool | Prediction: Round of 16

Current status: Out of competition | Beaten in/ by: Round of 16, Real Madrid

Last year’s runners-up have not been the Liverpool side we have come to know under Jurgen Klopp this season. While they sit just outside the top four in the Premier League, they have had number of disappointing results, with losses against teams they should have no problem beating.

It's a far cry from the team that have looked to be on Man City’s level over the years. As such, they have experienced what they will surely see as a far-too early exit from the Champions League.

In the Round of 16, Liverpool met the team that beat them in the final last year as well as in the 2018 final, Real Madrid.

This, along with the Bayern Munich vs PSG tie, was the must-watch matchup of the round, with everyone wanting to see if Liverpool could finally get their revenge on Real.

Unfortunately for the Reds, the hopes of possibly beating them didn't last long. After going up 2-0 early on in the first leg at Anfield, they squandered that lead before the end of the half, before going on to concede a further three goals in the second half to lose 5-2 on the day.

The second leg at the Bernabeu was no better, with Real having an easy enough time handling Liverpool, putting the tie truly to bed by winning the game 1-0 and the tie 6-2 on aggregate.

So that is it for Liverpool's Champions League campaign, and the end of their hopes for any silverware this season, as they are out of the FA Cup as well and would take a miracle for them to win the league title at this point.

Tottenham Hotspur | Prediction: Round of 16

Current status: Out of competition | Beaten in/ by: Round of 16, AC Milan

Tottenham’s Champions League campaign has also come to an early end, losing in the Round of 16 as we had predicted after they made it through the group stage.

Talking of the group stage, they managed to finish at the top of their fairly even group that also featured last year's Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt.

Tottenham were then given a tough draw in the Round of 16, coming up against the reigning Serie A champions AC Milan.

It was always going to be a tough matchup for Spurs, who haven't been at their very best this season but still find themselves in the top four in the Premier League.

The first leg in Milan saw them fall 1-0 to an early goal from Brahim Diaz. While they were statistically on top at the end of the game, they couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

In the second leg, the game played out to a 0-0 draw which was not good enough for them.

After appearing in the 2019 Champions League final, every year subsequently has been disappointing for the North London side, and another early exit does not bode well for the side.

They may still find themselves in next years competition, though, if they can keep their top four spot.
