Where is the F1 Canadian Grand Prix?
The Canadian GP takes place in Montreal, Canada. The race is held at the iconic Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, located on the man-made Notre-Dame Island in the St. Lawrence River.
The city is beloved by many and is the perfect backdrop to the Grand Prix - the fun will often overflow once the racing is over into downtown Montreal, where there are plenty of venues to keep fans going into the summer night.
How do I get to the Montreal track?
Getting to the Montreal track may sound challenging, being on an island in a river. But don't worry, it's one of the easier tracks to reach and spectators have a few options for getting there:
- Take the metro from downtown Montreal to the Jean-Drapeau station. From there, just cross one of the bridges to St Helen's Island, where the track is located. Depending on where your seats are and how adventurous you are feeling, you can either walk or hop on the bus 777 which will drop you near the circuit gates.
- Take the Navettes Maritime River shuttle from the Old Port of Montreal. It will bring you to Ile Ste-Helene, and from there, it's just a short 10-15 minute walk to the track.
- Taking a taxi is an option, but keep in mind that traffic can be heavy and it might take a while to get there. So, it's a good idea to arrange your return journey in advance.
As usual with any F1 weekend, travel options and walkways can get very crowded, so it is often a good idea to get there early if you want to skip the crush.
Please note - it is not advised to drive to the circuit as no parking is provided, and there is little to no parking in the area.
What is the Montreal F1 track like?
The Montreal GP track, officially known as Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, is a thrilling street circuit where drivers compete in 70 laps of the 4.361-kilometre track.
A favourite among drivers due to its fast, low-downforce layout, the circuit features challenging chicanes, heavy-braking sections, and an iconic hairpin turn. And then there's the famous 'Wall of Champions' at the final corner—a tricky spot that often trips up drivers. They have to carry a lot of pace going into the corner and often end up very close to the wall - but if they hit it, they’re out of the race. It’s aptly named because it caught out Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, and Michael Schumacher during the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix weekend.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is specifically designed for lots of overtaking, which F1 enthusiasts know always adds an extra thrill to the races. The track's unpredictable weather adds another variable to the mix, keeping everyone on their toes.
What is the weather like at the Canada F1?
Montreal in June is a beautiful time for the Grand Prix, with an average daytime temperature of 24 degrees. However, it's worth noting that there can be around 10 days of rain throughout the month. So, to ensure a great experience, it's important to come prepared for last-minute changes in the weather.

What should I bring to F1 Canada GP?
Pack something warmer for the early mornings, as well as a weatherproof outfit in case of sudden downpours. There can also often be quite a bit of walking involved in the weekend getting to and from your grandstand, so a sensible pair of trainers might be a good idea.
