No. 10: ‘As If It’s Your Last’
‘As If It’s Your Last’ is a great example of BLACKPINK’s synth-pop, house style that is so prevalent throughout their discography. The group often switch between ‘black’ and ‘pink’ concepts, with the former being a little darker and edgier and the latter being more upbeat and fun. ‘As If It’s Your Last’ was their first ‘pink’ concept, with retro, disco influences.
The song performed well on the charts, as do all of their singles, reaching number three on the South Korean Gaon charts and number two on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100. The music video ended up being the second most viewed in 24 hours by a Korean act, behind ‘Gentleman’ by PSY.
No. 9: ‘Whistle’
‘Whistle’ was BLACKPINK’s debut song, released in August 2016. Being from YG Entertainment, one of the top K-pop companies in South Korea, the world was watching when they stepped on the stage. From the get-go the group shined, bringing a fresh, bad girl vibe that other girl groups didn’t have at the time.
The song immediately gained positive reviews and even won three first place awards on weekly South Korean music shows. ‘Whistle’ was the first of BLACKPINK’s signature style, with catchy repeated hooks, drum n’ bass and hip-hop influences.
No. 8: ‘Pretty Savage’
‘Pretty Savage’ was performed in conjunction with ‘Lovesick Girls' on Korean music shows such as Inkigayo and Show! Music Core, showing off the iconic choreography to fans as a preview for their upcoming concert. The song is a middle finger to the haters, with the pinks telling the world that they’re savage and don’t care about other people’s opinions.
The track was written and produced by Teddy, who has produced much of BLACKPINK’s discography. His style is what gives the song its trap beat and staccato vocals, and of course their sassy lyrics that have really set them apart from the cute concepts prevalent in K-pop at the time.
No. 7: ‘BOOMBAYAH’
‘BOOMBAYAH’ was also on BLACKPINK’s debut album Square One, and just to show their impact right from the beginning they managed to be the fastest act to top the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in history. ‘BOOMBAYAH’ managed to just outsell ‘Whistle,’ just going to show how popular EDM music was in the 2010s.
It was clear from the start that BLACKPINK was joining the greats, as their music video was directed by the same director of ‘Fantastic Baby’ by BIGBANG and ‘I Am The Best’ by 2NE1. It was also the beginning of their iconic catchphrase, “BLACKPINK in your area” that shows up in many of their songs.
No. 6: ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’
Don’t be intimidated by the name of this song, ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ is a catchy, EDM trap tune with choreography anyone can copy, the finger gun hand gesture becoming a viral dance move. The music video remains the first by a K-pop group to reach two billion views, and is the most-viewed music video by a K-pop group to date.
Since its release in 2018, ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ has become emblematic of K-pop girl groups, especially those with a badass, empowered ‘girl crush’ concept. The song really solidified BLACKPINK’s trailblazing place in the industry and as leaders of girl groups in their generation.
No. 5: ‘How You Like That’
‘How You Like That’ is another catchy and high-energy song. Released in June 2020, it became an instant hit with its powerful beats, bold visuals, and confident lyrics. The song blends trap, EDM, and pop, which is what fans came to love about BLACKPINK’s music by this point.
BLACKPINK’s music often has a positive and empowering message, leaning away from the common themes of love and relationships in other K-pop songs and focusing on being braggadocious and self-assured. It’s this confidence that created a whole trend of empowering songs in K-pop!
No. 4: ‘Pink Venom'
Right from the first few seconds, you know ‘Pink Venom’ will be an iconic song. As the pinks chant “BLACKPINK” to bring in the beat, their signature EDM, trap sound is mixed with traditional Korean instruments, making for a truly unique song.
‘Pink Venom’ as a song title represents BLACKPINK and the group’s concept very well. They’re sweet but deadly, lovely poison, harking back to their original ‘black’ and ‘pink’ concepts. Lisa and Jennie’s raps are particularly interesting in this track as they interpolate lines from other artists like Rihanna and the Notorious B.I.G.
No. 3: ‘Kill This Love’
‘Kill This Love’ again builds on the trend of BLACKPINK subverting usual K-pop girl group songs. While most girl groups at the time were singing about being in love, BLACKPINK gave us a breakup anthem full of sass, big, stomping beats and rallying cries.
The song is often part of their tour setlists and headlining sets at music festivals like Coachella and BST Hyde Park. BLACKPINK put on an incredible performance with live vocals and criticality praised dancing, and if the Born Pink World Tour was the highest-grossing girl group tour of all time, just wait for their 2025 tour!
No. 2: ‘Shut Down’
‘Shut Down’ is one of BLACKPINK’s songs that stands out from the rest as it has a unique instrumental that sets it apart from many of their other loud, EDM-focused songs. The instrumental includes a violin sample of Niccolò Paganini's ‘La Campanella’ set over a hip-hop beat. The song, released in 2022, was the first K-pop song to top Spotify's weekly chart, proving they continue to set records well into their career.
The music video for the song is memorable as well, as it references past music videos from throughout BLACKPINK’s career. The girls recreate iconic scenes from past music videos with the original set pieces, before closing shutters on each set, signifying them moving on and becoming bigger and better than before.
No. 1: ‘Lovesick Girls’
‘Lovesick Girls’ is such an iconic BLACKPINK song and is one of their most-loved among fans, appearing on setlists for their tours and music festival appearances. Jennie and Jisoo even have production and songwriting credits on the track, alongside their producer Teddy and DJ David Guetta.
Its electronic sound makes it perfect to dance to, and you can just imagine crowds of pink lightsticks chanting along in a massive live performance. Jisoo and Rosé's vocals soar above the beat, with Jennie and Lisa’s rap verses always being a memorable part of their sound.
