No. 7: Coachella 2023
Coachella 2023 was a monumental occasion, where the girls turned the festival into ‘PinkChella’ with their iconic all-pink outfits. This was their second time performing at the festival, and by this time it was clear they were pros at performing for massive crowds and introducing global audiences to K-pop.
Their performance of ‘Typa Girl’ stands out for its unique choreography with feather fans, as the girls are revealed one by one to excited screams from the audience. The song does not have an official music video, so this great performance has a staggering 118 million views.
No. 6: The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon 2020
The fact that the world was in lockdown and the show was being recorded from home did not stop BLACKPINK from turning up ready to get to work. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the girls performed ‘How You Like That’ and wowed audiences at home with their dance moves and live vocals.
What was particularly special about this performance was the costumes they wore. The girls’ outfits were inspired by Hanbok – a type of traditional Korean dress. Lisa also wears a skirt with a traditional Thai pattern, paying homage to her heritage too.
No. 5: Inkigayo ‘BOOMBAYAH’ Debut Stage 2016
It’s hard to imagine that this was BLACKPINK’s first ever live performance after the release of their double debut singles, ‘Whistle’ and ‘BOOMBAYAH.’ They performed on Inkigayo, a weekly music show in South Korea, to promote their debut. Their stage presence is amazing for a debut group, and they look so happy to be performing.
Jennie and Lisa’s rapping skills are immediately apparent from the first verse, and Jisoo and Rosé bring it with their vocals, showing that they weren’t a group to be messed with. It was clear how fierce and hungry they were, which makes it such a great stage to watch even nine years later.
No. 4: YG Palm Stage 2021
The YG Palm Stage is a great example of BLACKPINK’s breathtaking visuals and how easily they can command a stage. The show was BLACKPINK’s first pay-per-view online concert to promote their first full-length album, The Album, which became a series for other artists under YG Entertainment.
BLACKPINK’s performance of ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ definitely stands out, as the girls push through a crowd of male dancers and literally walk on water with fire burning behind them. Their costumes look amazing, and enhance their pretty yet edgy look.
No. 3: MTV VMAs 2022
In 2022, BLACKPINK attended the MTV Video Music Awards and won Best Metaverse Performance for their online concert in the video game, PUBG, being the first artists to ever win the award. Then, they proved that they don’t just tear up the stage online but in person too as they performed ‘Pink Venom.’
BLACKPINK brought K-pop girl group music in front of a Western audience, paving the way for so many other groups after them. They wowed the audience with incredible visuals and costumes, and of course their amazing dance skills.
No. 2: Gayo Daejon 2018
This performance was truly legendary for BLINKs, creating so many viral moments. For one, the glittery hair clips Jennie wears in her performance of ‘SOLO’ became a huge hairstyle trend, going even further than just fans. Jennie is known for being a trendsetter with her fashion, and this was a big moment that everyone wanted to recreate.
Another great moment is when the other BLACKPINK girls join Jennie on stage and the song transitions into ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU.’ It goes to show that the girls are always supporting each other, even during their solo activities!
No. 1: Coachella 2019
BLACKPINK’s first-ever Coachella set was a big deal for BLINKs everywhere. You can see the girls really brought their A-game, showing up vocally and with their stage presence ready to convert everyone into BLINKs. The energy was unmatched, and it was a big night for K-pop fans everywhere as they became the first K-pop girl group to headline the festival.
BLACKPINK returned to Coachella once again in 2023, performing yet another fun-filled set. But the 2019 set was truly special as it was yet another instance of the group making K-pop history.
