Lady Gaga’s Albums, Ranked

No. 7: ‘Joanne’

Joanne is a more stripped-back album, as made obvious by the album art of Gaga without any crazy makeup or outfits, and the title which is named after one of her middle names. The genres in Joanne are much different to Gaga’s usual music too, taking a more country and soft rock approach.

Not every fan liked the album upon first listen, as most were expecting another electronic, club pop album. However, Lady Gaga did receive praise for the album, with critics saying it was a more down-to-earth and acoustic album and commending Gaga for her ability to switch genres.

No. 6: ‘Chromatica’

Chromatica came at just the right time for many of us, as the world went into lockdown in 2020 we were dreaming of being able to go out clubbing again, and Lady Gaga delivered the perfect soundtrack to those daydreams. The album had a cyberpunk aesthetic and heavily leaned into dance-pop and house.

The album also had some pretty iconic features, with Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, and Elton John making an appearance. And the remix album Dawn of Chromatica was also successful and featured artists like Rina Sawayama, Ashnikko, and Charli XCX.

No. 5: ‘ARTPOP’

As with many of Lady Gaga’s albums, ARTPOP was experimental and some weren’t sure about it upon release, but it has lasted as one of her best. One of Lady Gaga’s main messages since the beginning of her career has been how pop music is true art, and this album fully realises that idea.

‘Applause’ as a single was also incredibly popular, with its heavy, throbbing synths that transport you to a nightclub as you listen. Influenced by all the great artists that Lady Gaga has studied, the project is a standout for those who like to catch references.

No. 4: ‘Mayhem’

Mayhem is Lady Gaga’s new album, released 7th March 2025. So far the reviews are very favourable, calling the album a return to form after a few years of original soundtrack releases. The sound is grungy and true dance-pop with a mixture of slow songs added in too. ‘Die With A Smile’ also makes an appearance at the end.

Little monsters will be pleased to see a return of Gaga’s fashion-forward, edgy and dark visuals along with the pop sound so many have missed from her. She incorporates guitar and a punk vocal affect to add a little rock inspiration and set it apart from her early dance-pop albums.

No. 3: ‘The Fame’

The Fame was a landmark debut album, giving the people what they needed at the time which was an album about dancing at the club and having fun when the world was going through financial difficulty. The escapism The Fame provided made Lady Gaga an instant star, with so many of the tracks becoming iconic.

‘Just Dance,’ ‘Paparazzi,’ ‘LoveGame’ and ‘Poker Face’ are some of the standout tracks on the album, helping to completely revive electronic music on the radio in the late 2000s and create an almost decade-long trend of EDM and house music in pop.

No. 2: ‘Born This Way’

The Born This Way album is a classic for so many, as the main message of loving yourself the way you are resonated with a lot of fans, particularly the LGBTQ+ community. Released in 2011, it marked the start of a wave of queer media and acceptance, and Gaga wasn’t hiding it as she proclaims “No matter gay, straight, or bi / Lesbian, transgendered life.”

Other amazing songs on the album include ‘Marry The Night,’ ‘Judas’ and ‘The Edge of Glory,’ and it showed that Gaga could follow up The Fame perfectly. It’s so iconic that the track ‘Bloody Mary’ was released as the sixth single in 2022 after going viral on TikTok 11 years after the release of the album.

No. 1: ‘The Fame Monster’

What other album could possibly top the list other than The Fame Monster? Often considered Gaga’s magnum opus and her album with the most impact, The Fame Monster was originally meant to be a deluxe version of The Fame but was released as a standalone EP as Gaga believed the albums were conceptually different.

The Fame Monster had a darker, more Gothic aesthetic, with the cover being shot by former Celine creative director, Hedi Slimane. With the album Lady Gaga won three Grammys, achieved major chart success with songs ‘Bad Romance,’ ‘Alejandro’ and ‘Telephone’ featuring Beyoncé, and created a lasting legacy with her music and image.
