Rohit Sharma
The current captain of both the Indian Test and One Day International (ODI) teams, and former captain of the T20l team, Rohit Sharma is known as one of the best opening batsmen of all time, as well as one of the all-time greats of his generation.
Sharma is a fierce batter with a huge skill for hitting sixes (with the nickname ‘Hitman’ as a result).
Despite his powerful batting technique he simultaneously manages to maintain a style and grace about his technique that is unique to him.
He’s also got a myriad of batting records in the cricketing world, including the most runs scored in T20 internationals and most sixes scored in international cricket.
The star has also scored the most centuries during World Cups, as well as being the only player to ever win 50 matches whilst captaining in the ODIs.
If that wasn’t enough, Sharma holds the world record for the highest ever batting score in an ODI, scoring 264 against Sri Lanka back in 2014.
After Sharma took India to victory in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, English fans will be hoping and praying that the English team can see off India at next year’s Test match series.
Sachin Tendulkar
Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is a legend for a reason. Captaining the Indian team in Test matches between 1996 and 2000 as well as ODIs between 1996 and 1999, he has a name as one of the best batsmen to ever come out of cricket, and may well be the best Indian cricket player of all time.
His batting skills were second to none, and Tendulkar holds the record for the highest number of runs in Test cricket at 18,000 in total, as well as 15,000 in ODI cricket.
With Tendulkar on the team, the Indian team won the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
Tendulkar retired from all forms of cricket in 2013, at which point he’d scored over 34,000 runs across 664 international cricket matches. Known as the ‘God of Cricket’, it’s clear to see how he earned his nickname in the sport.
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli is an unorthodox right arm quick bowler as well as one of the best batsmen of all time - and for that reason is one of India’s biggest current threats to England.
He played a huge role in India winning the 2011 Cricket World Cup, alongside the 2024 T20 World Cup.
As the first player to achieve the feat of scoring 20,000 runs within 10 years, Kohli is a formidable force on the field with an aggressive and energetic style.
Within International Cricket he has won a huge amount of awards, including 10 ICC awards. He’s also received praise from cricket legend Brian Lara and former England captain Joe Root, who have remarked on him being one of the greatest of all time.
Kohli has often been compared to Sachin Tendulkar, who he has stated is his role model - and it's expected that Kohli may actually beat some of Tendulkar’s records by the end of his career. Watch this space!
Rahul Dravid
Rahil Dravid was a player and captain for the Indian team throughout the noughties, as well the head coach for India.
Dravid earned himself the nicknames of “Mr Dependable” - for obvious reasons - as well as “The Wall”. Late, great cricketer Shane Warne explained the reasoning behind “The Wall”.
The Times of India quotes Warne as saying, “As these things go, Rahul Dravid being known as 'The Wall' is pretty much spot on. 'The fortress' could also describe Rahul. Because once Dravid was set, you needed the bowling equivalent of a dozen cannon firing all at once to blast him down.”
During his illustrious international career, Dravid scored over 24,000 runs for India, and is the fourth-highest ever scorer in Test cricket. He is only behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis in terms of runs.
In 2021, he became the head coach of the Indian cricket team, where he stayed until 2024. He was the coach that led the team to victory in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is known widely as the most successful of all the Indian cricket captains due to his ability to lead his team to victory in major tournaments.
MS Dhoni played for India in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014, and T20 from 2007 to 2017. During that time the team’s victories were numerous, including winning the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and the 2014 ICC Champions Trophy.
He is known for his prowess as a wicket-keeper batsman, being very fast at running between wickets, and using the “helicopter shot” technique when batting.
Under his guidance, the team also won the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016.
Dhoni retired from Test cricket in 2014 and as ODI captain of India in 2017, though he currently still plays for the Chennai Super Kings.
