Book Aston Villa hospitalityOrigins of Aston Villa in the FA Cup
Aston Villa won their first ever FA Cup title in 1887 defeating West Brom 2-0. The match is remembered for Archie Hunter's goal contributions after he scored the second goal from lying on the ground due to a collision with the goal keeper.
In 1888, the competition format was altered to the structure still used today. As FA Cup holders, Aston Villa reached the fifth round but ultimately lost to Preston North End on January 7th at Wellington Road.
Early FA Cup Milestones
As a historically strong team, Aston Villa were always expected to perform well and be consistent title contenders. In the 1891-92 season, Villa finished as runners-up. In the 1894-95 season, they won the FA Cup for the second time. Just two years later, the team achieved the double, winning both the Football League Championship and the FA Cup for the third time.
In the 1895 FA Cup Final Bob Chatt scored a record breaking goal inside the first 30 seconds of the game, a record that stood for 114 years until 2009, when Louis Saha of Everton scored within 25 seconds against Chelsea.
Best Aston Villa FA Cup Moments
Since the turn of the century, Villa have had mixed results in the FA Cup. In 2000, they reached the final but lost to Chelsea, and a similar story unfolded in 2015 when they reached the final but were beaten 4-0 by Arsenal.
Perhaps the most exciting FA Cup campaign for the Villans has been the current 2024/2025 season. With regular European football, they’ve built strong momentum and are now awaiting Preston in the quarter-finals. To reach this stage, they have beaten West Ham, Tottenham, and Cardiff City. With Aston Villa's last FA Cup win in 1957, they have a lot to prove.
