Now, the boxer has confirmed that he will be getting back in the ring in December, and rumours are rife over who his opponent may be.
Read on to discover AJ's best quotes in the build up to his next fight.
Anthony Joshua on his next opponent
Just two days after fighting Franklin and stating that he wanted to get back in the ring in the "next three months", AJ confirmed that he will not be fighting again until December 2023.
The two-time unified heavyweight champion revealed that he is not necessarily happy about this decision. On AJ's Instagram story, he told his followers that "My next fight is scheduled for December. Not ideal but everything is part of a bigger picture".
After back-to-back defeats against Usyk, Anthony Joshua was happy to be on the winning side following his victory over Franklin. When asked who his next opponent will be, AJ revealed:
"Dillian Whyte or Tyson Fury? Well, 100 per cent Tyson Fury." "That is the pot of gold. That is the WBC heavyweight champion of the world. That's what it's all about, so definitely Tyson Fury".
However, we now know that plans for a Fury v AJ fight are not going to come to fruition any time soon. After Fury sent a draft contract to Joshua's team, AJ has confirmed that he will not be choosing to take part in the 'big money fight'.
Now, it is all but officially confirmed that AJ is scheduled to fight Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia this December.
And for future fights
As AJ looks to be set to fight Deontay Wilder this winter, fans are wondering if they can expect more action from the boxer.
Speculation is rife that Joshua could accept a rematch with Dillian Whyte before he comes head-to-head with Whyte.
Boxing Scene confirmed that Eddie Hearn, Joshua's long-term promoter, revealed:
"If August and particularly the Deontay Wilder fight doesn't materialise, absolutely he'll fight Tyson Fury next." He went on to say that "We all know AJ against Wilder is a dream heavyweight matchup, one of the biggest in sport. And we're up for that fight. But that is our plan, you know, ideally Dillian Whyte in August, Deontay Wilder in December".
With AJ and his team keen for a summer fight against Whyte, could we see Joshua back in the ring sooner than we thought?
Next fight host rumours
With AJ set to fight in the Middle East this winter, it is likely that if he does fight Whyte, he will do so closer to home.
However, as discussions are still under wraps, Joshua is yet to reveal plans around specific details.
We will keep this blog up to date with the latest information and news.
